Power of Web 2

Posted by: shivprakash on: March 3, 2009

The Web 2.0 has arrived There were days when people were very excited with just being able to communicate using their computers on the hyper terminals .Then came world wide web and full fledged messengers working over internet protocols .There were times when Bill Gates said that hardware would become unimportant and software would take over the machines .So was thy wish and since then the windows has now become the most dominant Operating System all over .When the windows was at its peak Bill said the next generation will be dominated by devices that will be interconnected and they would seamlessly connect each other .

Today most of the applications and databases are updated and operated in real time than offline for example the recent BPL census in RAJASTHAN used the web based application and the synchronization for compiling the various subjects under the census .It was implemented with the help from the NIC(National Informatics centre) and the technologies based on the .Net framework.(PCQUEST JUNE 2008, internet sources) Web 2 arrived and the torch bearer of this civilization is none other than your family’s favorite search engine Google. Seemingly the powers of web 2 has gradually replaced the importance of OS as the vital component of computing applications .Almost all applications can now be found integrated in your browser only with support systems based on either JAVASCRIPT or FLASH or the newcomer silverlight. Whether it is office application , Blogging ,Image editing ,file sharing ,Networking or Albums; you find numerous online applications for suiting your needs and providing the equivalent support facilities as their cotemporaries are offering now .

ONLINE OFFICE : There are host of providers working in this field the main ones being the ZOHO , GOOGLE DOCS and THINKFREE. These sites requires the user to have an ID and password to login and but that’s the only thing required these services are absolutely free (except the cost to stay afloat online ,gee!).They are just designed similar to the traditional MS office applications. Google provides the Google document , Google spreadsheet and Google presenter the contemporaries of MS word ,MS Excel and MS PowerPoint .The options to save the file are plenty , you could chose the format in which you want to save the file be rtf, open office formats, zip and word file formats .The most important and the attractive feature is that you can create and save the file in google itself and it can be edited from various location through multiple user working on it .For example , you require a file to be edited after you have last saved it then the next user can update the file and the file in the ends remains updated in real time at all locations .And finally you can publish it over web where other will be able to see it . Google spreadsheet is the contemporary of the MS Excel , in fact most of the excel features are available on it and you can readily make all your databases online .An interesting feature in the Google spreadsheet is its analogous function to the VLOOKUP , HLOOKUP ; the “Googlelookup” this function actually searches the world wide web for the value in the data field !! Zoho is equally good office provider .Interestingly Zoho works faster than the Google Docsand offers about 14 different services including the project management software, web conferencing , CRM database and reporting an online organizer as well as the chat facility .Zoho is among the few online office providers that offers online spell check too ! Here too you can save the document in various formats like word formats , sxw ,PDF ,ODT ,RTF ,TXT and HTML formats .

BLOGGING: Blogging can be defined as : A portmanteau of Web and log-blogs are simply personalised Web sites that are as good as an online diary. This has become a transforming and most proactive phenomena in the web lately these days you even find the Indian bollywood stars hooked to blogging .This has been the mouth piece of the internet’s democratic character . Infact many a times the blogger have brought a real insight into the happening of the areas against the biased reporting . Blogger and WordPress are unarguably the best of blogging providers .Blogger was an independent company earlier but it has now been taken over by Google , so your google Id can work here too . Besides the blogger also supports the OPEN ID so that you may use you’re the same id across the various supporting sites .The blogger provides a lost of gadgets that you can apply to your blog like photos , links, RSS feeds ,videos ,polls ,labels or your own javascript or the HTML. There are a lot of templates to choose from in the blogger index ,still if you are the kind who is very keen to details a lot of sites provide free templates for the blogger site like the www.bloggertemplates.org , www.finalsense.com/services/blog_templates . Another good feature in the blogger is seamless integration with the youtube videos ,you can easily add your youtube videos for sharing in the blogger. Now the questions is if blogger is so good what’s different with the wordpress? WordPress is the favourite choice of the geeks .It provides the ability to put plugins-downloadable windgets that improve the functionality and tweaks in the weblog .With a few tweaks on the blog the blog just looks as if professionally designed website. Besides you have excellent facilities to export or import the blog from and to wordpress.

ONLINE IMAGE EDITORS : And finally the image or graphic editing part that catches the fantasy of every kind on the block and even of the great engineers working on it .Online graphic editing has not evolved so much as the offline ones but the start has been really commendable .However the image editors come with a pre requisite that you machine must have been installed with the JAVA-virtual machine or the flash plugins . The contenders in the fray include www.picnik.com , www.pixenate.com , www.snipshot.com and www.splashup.com . These site have the integration with the flickr , webshot , photobucket or other photo sharing sites. You can choose the image to be edited and get started with the editor right away .You can set the light , intensity , size , hue saturation ,cropping and various other aspects of the picture with the tools provided. My favourites include the splashup site , it has an easy interface and the most advanced features of the her pack. The interface resembles the interface of Adobe photoshop and would be a little intimidating to the people who would just want to crop or resize the pic but the splashup site offers many powerful tools .

SOCIAL NETWORKING: Most of us are aware of the social networking sites and the greatest fad of the young surfers in the net ORKUT. These come under the social networking sites. The largest of social networking sites is the FACEBOOK and it offers a host of services under its website. It has host of its own as well as third party windgets and applications that you can add to your own page and interact with others .

MASHUPS: In technology, a mashup is a web application that combines data from more than one source into a single integrated tool; an example is the use of cartographic data from Google Maps to add location information to real-estate data, thereby creating a new and distinct web service that was not originally provided by either source. Content used in mashups is typically sourced from a third party via a public interface or API (web services), although some in the community believe that cases where private interfaces are used should not count as mashups. Other methods of sourcing content for mashups include Web feeds (e.g. RSS or Atom), and screen scraping. Many people are experimenting with mashups using Amazon, eBay, Flickr, Google, Microsoft, Yahoo and YouTube APIs, which has led to the creation of the mashup editor. The architecture of Mashup web applications is always composed of three parts: – The content provider: it is the source of the data. Data is made available using an API and different Web-protocols such as RSS,REST, and Web Service – The Mashup site: is the web application which provides the new service using different data sources that are not owned by it. – The client web browser: is the user interface of the Mashup. In a web-application, the content can be mashed by the client web browsers using client side web language for example JavaScript

Overall the focus has now shifted to the internet and the coming decades are seeing the rise of this new space with Google is grabbing with both hand at every chance it sees .(Read the acquisitions of blogger, youtube and host of other web companies, besides of course spoiling the sweet adventure of MS with Yahoo by playing the spoil sport. Playing the influences in US govt policies on 3G and other technologies).Lets wait and watch ,the century saw the rise and fall of IBM, MICROSOFT and now may be GOOGLE is awaiting to take over.

OPEN SOLARIS is HERE folks !

OPEN SOLARIS

There were times when IBM believed that this 14 year old kid’s operating system would never be the major concern for the hardware and the primary focus of the hardware and computing shall remain the hardware and hardwire programming and then BILL GATES happily smiled .Soon the MSDOS had taken over . Just when Bill declared that the Windows is the largest used operating system the rebel  ,the freedom fighter Linus gave birth to LINUX and the penguin is arguably the best open systems mascot the favorites of all the geeks world over . But then the SUN kept shining high .Time is set to reveal the system that will have the last laugh .The time has arrived —- “OPEN SOLARIS”.

This operating system has a lots of feeling of us in it . For the bugs and their fixtures have been provided by lovers of open source all over the globe . This is the product of plurality of our thinking and the integration of the experiences onto this magnificent collage of code.

DOWNload  & INSTALL :

Well the SUN MICROSYSTEMS has now officially released the Open Solaris CD  version of 200805 .This can be downloaded via the site www.opensolaris.com .But if you are using the download manager or your connection hangs up like a lazy Garfield or if u have a broadband and pissed of with the download rate of only upto  15-20 KBps …. Don’t try it from this site . Because probably the site is being heavily being hit upon computer and the mad stampede for the OS has claimed life of the bit rate .Never mind the geek gals I have a solution only for you  . Get the torrent for the OS , google a bit and you will find  a good lot of torrent for the OS .This will download at all the good speed your connection can provide .

So far so good …When this file has been download the iso file is to be burnt , yes coz there is a good section in the FAQ the site that says it . Bring the NERO or any other CD burner and burn it on the CD . Restart the machine with boot from CD. Select the language and the keyboard layout. Installation is very easy . The CD loads and the live system boots the computer and the required hardware . This gives and easy option for the  install .Click the install button on the desktop .And a install dialog box opens up .It reminds me of the MAC installation , the partition are named as the solaris and other….. Like the mac’y thing .. Select size of the solaris partition (or complete install , if u wish ) .Type the administrator and user password ,computer name……… and let the set up run after setting the time zone the install is over quick and simple .

INITIAL look and feel :

Restart the machine and you would be greeted by the GRUB loader this time with the background of solaris .Select the OS  and continue (IT has however a short coming that it list all the partions in the drive even if the partition is not loaded with the Operating System , so don’t panic if the first windows in the grub says “UNABLE TO LOAD THE BOOTMGR” .Try the other ) If u happen to use the fedora then perhaps you would feel that this is something similar . This login screen is somewhat similar .Type the user name and password and you would get the common feel of the LINUX environment.

Most of the feel has been maintained as the linux environment.

A possible drawback I have faced is that it doesn’t read the windows partitions . you would have to open your windows documents or the partitions made in windows using windows only . It doesn’t have the sufficient sound drivers , but guys take heart the freedom lovers should not be deterred , try looking in www.opensound.com, or the hardware manufacturers site for the drivers .

It has host of other integrated open source softwares bundled in it for the use . It has the MOZILLA firefox and the thunderbird mail client. Beside open office.

Scope for the work :

Well most open source Operating systems act as the killers themselves and chop their own wings by not providing enough support systems .The communities shall  ensure that the geekiness doesnot overpaw the basics of decent  GUI , the plug and play connectivity . for starters they should have atlesat focus on compulsory three things for the OS to last at least some time on the machine

1 Sound and video plugins , drivers

2.Modem , wireless and Ethernet drivers .Easy touch connectivities…coz non nerds just wanna listen some music , catch a movie  and surf net .So appease them and this will create mass market and our future will be secured with the market .

Long live SOLARIS

INTEL launches Atom Chips

Posted by: shivprakash on: April 10, 2008

Intel Atom

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) – Intel Corp (INTC.O: Quote, Profile, Research) is rolling out five new Atom microprocessors and a collection of chips designed for portable gadgets that access the Internet and for other uses, as the world’s largest chipmaker uses its marketing muscle to help create a new market.

The low-power, tiny Atom chips will come in speeds of up to 1.86 gigahertz and Intel says that speed, plus other technologies designed into the chip, make it the fastest processor that consumes 3 watts of electricity or less.

The recently named Atom family of processors is part of Intel’s effort to have chips designed with Intel Architecture — the fundamental blueprint of its semiconductors — in myriad computing devices — from what it calls mobile Internet devices, or MIDs, all the way up to high-performance computers.

Intel is making the announcements at its Intel Developer Forum conference on Wednesday in Shanghai, the company said.

“Global Internet growth continues unabated,” said Anand Chandrasekher, who runs Intel’s Ultra Mobility Group. “The best Internet experience is still on the PC, but users want to carry that experience with them.”

That is where the Atom and Centrino Atom, come in. The Centrino Atom also includes a single-chip with integrated graphics called Intel System Controller Hub that allows for PC-like capabilities and long battery life for devices that fit in a user’s pocket.

“Intel is really pumping this category,” said Roger Kay, an analyst with market research firm Endpoint Technologies Associates. “That said, mobile Internet is here. For them this is really a great potential business.”

Intel said that the features of the Atom processor — the “brains” of an electronic device — and its system controller hub would help device makers create a range of MIDs with differing functions and designs.

Chandrasekher said major device makers are already planning to adopt Atom, with more than 20 manufacturers coming out with products using the processor. As far as MIDs, those will start shipping in May, he said.

He said Intel expects about 30 percent of those MIDs to have both WiFi — short range high-speed wireless Internet access — and WiMax — longer-range high-speed access designed into them.

MID device makers include Asus, Fujitsu, Lenovo, NEC, Panasonic, Samsung, Sharp and Toshiba, among others, and prices will probably average about $500, with some priced higher than that or lower, depending on the functions, Chandrasekher said in a telephone briefing ahead of his keynote speech at the IDF in Shanghai.

The small size of the Atom processor — the die of the chip is less than 25 square millimeters, or about a 10th of the low- cost Celeron desktop and notebook PC chip — also lets Intel target the embedded market.

Embedded chips are used in devices such as portable cash registers, robotics for industrial manufacturing, kiosks, patient monitoring and car “infotainment” systems.

The economics of the diminutive chip are appealing, Kay said, noting Intel gets nearly 2,700 Atom processors from a single dinner-plate-size silicon wafer.

He estimates Intel could yield about $30,000 per wafer with a gross margin of around 50 percent, not far off the gross margin of its mainstream PC chips. He put Intel’s approximate cost-per-chip for Atom at about $11.

“If you start looking at that number, then the profitability of one of these things sold at $45, or even $160, they’re fantastically profitable,” Kay said.

Still, do not expect the MID and this new market to take off right out of the gate.

“The world often divides half way between the reality on the ground and where Intel would like it to go,” Kay added. “It’ll likely go a little more slowly than Intel would like.”

Intel atom

Well this is a good step forward I see, still to come must be the holographic processors for the mobile devices i guess.i read somewhere that CERN is co ordinating a project for providing low cost holgraphic generators .I am already dreaming futuristic as it gets ,live 3d hologram of a person i am chatting , forget GUI … then there would me 3DUI . The sooner the better , the brains at Intel must  have thought that much before !

Battle of Browsers

Posted by: shivprakash on: April 10, 2008

The battle of Browsers Judging strictly by the sheer volume of vulnerabilities Mozilla Firefox was the most insecure browser in 2007, according to Symantec. Firefox had a total of 122 security holes, more than any other rival browser. Symantec credited the efforts poured into securing Internet Explorer 7 for IE managing to be situated under Firefox in terms of security flaws. Internet Explorer, Firefox, Opera and Safari are together synonymous with the browser market, having divided the vast majority of the Internet audience among them. In addition to the constant race for an increased install base, the four browsers are also continually evolving toward new standards of performance, compatibility and security. In this regard, Symantec has published a report offering an insight on one critical aspect of browser security – vulnerabilities.

According to the Cupertino-based security company, there is an increasing trend for the threat environment to shift the focus of exploits and attacks toward client-side problems, with browsers growing in prominence. Obviously, no browser is a panacea to security or a silver-bullet solution, and at the same time the vulnerability count is not, in itself, a complete measure of security.

“Web browser vulnerabilities are a serious security concern due to their role in online fraud and the propagation of spyware and adware. They are particularly prone to security concerns because they come in contact with more potentially untrusted or hostile content than most other applications. This is a concern because attacks can originate from malicious Web sites or legitimate Web sites that have been compromised to serve malicious content. It is also true that browsers can play a role in client-side attacks because of their ability to invoke plug-ins and other applications when handling potentially malicious content served from the Web such as documents and media files,” Symantec stated.
Firefox was impacted by no less than 88 vulnerabilities in the second half of the past year, with another 34 in the first half. Mozilla’s open source browser cumulated more vulnerabilities in 2007 than any other browser, this despite the fact that Firefox is generally perceived as an apex of security. For Firefox, 19 vulnerabilities in the second half of 2007 and 12 in the first half were labeled with a severity rating of medium by Symantec, and the remaining 34 flaws in July-December 2007 and 22 in January-June 2007 were designated as representing only low-level threats.

“Safari was affected by 22 vulnerabilities in the second half of 2007. One was considered high severity, 12 were medium, and nine were low. This is a decrease from the 25 Safari vulnerabilities that were documented in the first half of 2007, of which seven were medium severity and 18 were low,” Symantec added.

No less than 57 security vulnerabilities affected Internet Explorer in 2007, but the volume is lower compared with just the holes that plagued Firefox between July and December of the past year. Furthermore, only 13 security holes were labeled as medium with the remaining five rated as low out of the 18 IE vulnerabilities in the second half of 2007. In the first half of the past year, IE was impacted by 39 vulnerabilities, with 15 medium, and 23 low.

“In the last six months of 2007, 12 vulnerabilities were documented in Opera. Of these, eight were medium severity and four were low. This is fewer than the seven vulnerabilities that affected Opera in the first half of 2007, of which three were considered medium severity and four were low,” Symantec said.

According to the Cupertino-based security company, the increase in popularity of both Firefox and Safari has been synonymous with a jump in the number of vulnerabilities discovered. In the second half of the past year, both Safari and Firefox had more security flaws compared to Internet Explorer.

“While fewer vulnerabilities were discovered in Internet Explorer during this period, Mozilla was subject to a sharp increase. The decrease in Internet Explorer vulnerabilities may be due to the focus on security in Internet Explorer 7. The increase in Mozilla vulnerabilities was a by-product of internal and community driven security audits of the browser,” Symantec said

Though the people have been crying foul ever since MSIE took over Netscape comm , but then did any one say the Netscape guys have been recently heard of taking a full scale battle in the markets head on .. ! The uglier  the better  , coz in the end we are the benefitted :)

Best antivirus awards goes to……

Posted by: shivprakash on: April 10, 2008

live OneCareA new year… A new beginning… And the inevitable security solution smackdown. In this context, AV-Test has thrown together in the same arena no less than 24 antivirus products from the heavyweights of the security market. The security solutions were tested against in excess of 1 million malware samples from the last six months. According to Av-Test’s Andreas Marx, the test involved only the top of the line, “‘best’ available Security Suite edition” from each vendor, last updated on January 7, 2008, and running on Windows XP SP2. And yes Microsoft’s Windows Live OneCare 2.0 was tested, but no, it’s not the best antivirus of 2008. Well, of the beginning of 2008, anyway…

“First, we checked the signature-based on-demand detection of all products against more than 1 Mio. samples we’ve found spreading or which were distributed during the last six months (this means, we have not used any ‘historic’ samples.) We included all malware categories in the test: Trojan Horses, backdoors, bots, worm and viruses. Instead of just presenting the results, we have ranked the product this time, from ‘very good’ (++) if the scanner detected more than 98% of the samples to ‘poor’ (–) when less than 85% of the malware was detected,” Marx revealed.

In terms of signature-based on-demand detection, Windows Live OneCare 2.0 held its own. Microsoft’s security solution ended up detecting a total of 992,880 out of all the malware samples thrown against it, and accounting for a “Signature Detection” rate of 96.9%. This is nothing short of an excellent score for Windows Live OneCare, an antivirus that at the beginning of 2007 managed to occupy positions only towards the bottom of the security solution pack in early 2007. In the latest AV-Test “Signature Detection” test OneCare 2.0 came on top of F-Prot (986,961 – 96.3%), Panda (979,409 – 95.6%), McAfee (959,919 – 93.7%) and Nod32 (953,936 – 93.1%).

However, OneCare 2.0 was bested by the likes of AVK 2008 (1,022,418 – 99.8%); AntiVir (1,020,627 – 99.6%); Avast! (1,018,204 – 99.4%); Trend Micro (1,009,662 – 98.6%); Symantec (1,006,849 – 98.3%); AVG (1,005,006 – 98.1%); BitDefender (1,003,902 – 98.0%); Kaspersky (1,003,470 – 98.0%);
Sophos (1,001,655 – 97.8%) and F-Secure (999,806 – 97.6%). The complete results of the “Signature Detection” test from AV-Test can be accessed here, courtesy of Sunbelt Software.

“Secondly, we checked the number of false positives of the products have generated during a scan of 65,000 known clean files. Only products with no false positives received a ‘very good’ (++) rating. In case of the proactive detection category, we have not only focussed on signature- and heuristic-based proactive detection only (based on a retrospective test approach with a one week old scanner). Instead of this, we also checked the quality of the included behavior based guard (e.g. Deepguard in case of F-Secure and TruPrevent in case of Panda). We used 3,500 samples for the retrospective test as well as 20 active samples for the test of the ‘Dynamic Detection’ (and blocking) of malware,” Marx added.

Windows Live OneCare 2.0 is among the few security solutions that have scored a ++ in the test for False Positives. This means that OneCare 2.0 has generated no false positives, a task also completed by the security solutions from Symantec, Nod32, and Fortinet. However, OneCare 2.0 was ranked as having only a poor proactive detection, and a very poor response time to new malware being issued (more than 8 hours). But at the same time, out of all the malicious code it had to go through, OneCare 2,0 only missed two rootkits. The Anti-virus comparison test of current anti-malware products, Q1/2008 can be accessed here.

“Furthermore, we checked how long AV companies usually need to react in case of new, widespread malware (read: outbreaks), based on 55 different samples from the entire year 2007. ‘Very good’ (++) AV product developers should be able to react within less than two hours. Another interesting test was the detection of active rootkit samples. While it’s trivial for a scanner to detect inactive rootkits using a signature, it can be really tricky to detect this nasty malware when they are active and hidden. We checked the scanner’s detection against 12 active rootkits,” Marx said.

Anyways whatever may be the verdict , I am a student  developer and according to the student developer market findings I found that the guys with windows prefered that Windows live one care as it didnot hog much memory as most of the security features it uses are already emmbedded in the OS .Also the vista version of windows has enough security tools like UAC tha prevents the lower auto executable infections .However in any case of major security danger from widespread release of any virus is not at all taken care by most of the common and the major AV.

Moreover the windows liveOneCare is currently coming with a trail of 90 days , enough for warding trouble against the virus for 3 months as compared to Norton internet security’s 15 days . lol !

MICROSOFT WEB DEVELOPER resources …

Posted by: shivprakash on: March 9, 2008

All those guys who feel that the clicks and the interfaces of the MS are good and has something to do with the development in the web should go to the link — this link provides the base of various technologies in the redmond specially developed fro the audio and visual effects in the web. Well for the fact there are various developer site . My series of blogs shall now cover various developer forums and links tht could come handy to the nerds of low grade to the avant grade.Though the MS fellows are good at everything the interface of the MSDN is very dissmal and not of the kind that could have been from MS .The microsoft site has been done very neatly and attractively . The MSDN should not be that heavy but atleast it could have been better , MS carries the burden of carrying the image of the masterand so it can’t afford to be relaxed for anything of it . Love it or hate it the MS has altogehter different place in the computing histroy of the planet , MS was the only one to bet for the Software when biggies like IBM thought of the hardware . Imagine your own computer without the MS ? Even if you say lot of crap about it but at the end you have the same things running ur machine. Can u think of any other company so severly scanned and scrutinized for each and every detail, if u can then think MS is facing competition.Google is very revered for its search prowess and lately in Asia for it beta version of orkut .But then most of it technologies remain unscrutnized and so u can afford to think that google doesn’t  carry that pressures to perform.MS in itself feeds millions by it own turnover nearly 350 bn $ plus lots of magazines and other people related to it .Also this includes MS bashers (most tech journos and motivated linux users ) and millions of MS hacker who make millions on a single leak discovered. Imagine the irony ! u have a thousand of coder for coding the MS and a millions for hacking into it still it manages to make without a major hassle .That too when MS coders are paid employees and hacker unpaids dedicated enthusiats .MS in this way must be fooding another 60 bn $.Its very lonely at top and nobody appreciates it .

GOT emotional , insist on original MS software atleast the cheaper ones for starters … if not all.

The following data has been extracted from the MSDN site

Windows Media Encoder SDK

The Microsoft® Windows Media™ Encoder application compresses live or stored audio and video content into Windows Media files or streams. It enables users to create multimedia productions from devices attached to their computers, translate audio/visual files into Windows Media Format, and either save the Windows Media-based content to a local file or broadcast it to the Internet.

Web developers can create an HTML user interface and access the SDK through script commands. Script developers can use the Windows Media Encoder SDK and the Windows Scripting Host to automate the batch conversion process. The SDK can also be used with either the default user interface or a custom user interface through Microsoft Visual C++® or Microsoft Visual Basic®.

For more information, see the Windows Media Encoder SDK Web site.

Producer SDK

Microsoft Producer for PowerPoint® 2002, an add-on for PowerPoint 2002 in Microsoft Office XP, makes it easy for everyday business users and media professionals to create engaging rich-media presentations by synchronizing audio, video, slides, and images. These rich-media presentations can be viewed on demand in a browser across the Internet or an intranet.

The Microsoft Producer SDK, part of the Microsoft Producer download, provides an object model that you can use to create publishing e-services for Microsoft Producer. To publish a presentation, users normally must move through a series of wizard pages and individually specify publishing parameters, such as file paths or profile settings. Using the Producer object model, you can specify the Uniform Resource Locator (URL) of an HTML document that functions as a custom user interface in the Publish Wizard, create registry keys that add your e-service to the Microsoft Producer Publish Wizard user interface, and specify profile information associated with your e-service.

For more information on the Producer SDK, please download Microsoft Producer from http://www.microsoft.com/office/powerpoint/producer.

Windows Media Rights Manager SDK

Using the Windows Media Rights Manager SDK, developers can create applications that encrypt (package) digital media files and issue licenses for those digital media files. A packaged Windows Media file contains a version of the file that has been encrypted with a key so that only the person who has obtained a license for that file can play it. The license is separate from the packaged Windows Media file, which means that the content and license for that content can be acquired at different times. Encrypted files can be either streamed or downloaded to the consumer’s computer. For more information, see the Windows Media Rights Manager SDK.

Windows Media Player SDK

The Windows Media Player SDK enables developers to create player applications with a custom look and feel using the Windows Media Player control in an HTML page. You can programmatically control and display playlists from a Web page, automatically stop or seek to specified markers in the stream, set bandwidth preferences for network reception, and add custom skins to the control’s user interface.

Microsoft JScript® and Microsoft Visual Basic® Scripting Edition are supported. For more information, see the Windows Media Player SDK.

Video Control (DirectShow SDK)

The Video Control is a Microsoft ActiveX® control that enables developers to create HTML-based analog and digital TV applications and DVD applications that run on Microsoft Windows® XP Home Edition and Windows XP Professional. Other related objects enable the creation of custom electronic program guides from script applications.

The product provides effortless interaction with digital content through natural gestures, touch and physical objects. In essence, it’s a surface that comes to life for exploring, learning, sharing, creating, buying and much more. Soon to be available in restaurants, hotels, retail establishments and public entertainment venues, this experience will transform the way people shop, dine, entertain and live.

Description:                 Surface is a 30-inch display in a table-like form factor that’s easy for individuals or small groups to interact with in a way that feels familiar, just like in the real world. Surface can simultaneously recognize dozens and dozens of movements such as touch, gestures and actual unique objects that have identification tags similar to bar codes.  Surface will ship to partners with a portfolio of basic applications, including photos, music, virtual concierge and attract mode, that can be customized to provide their customers with unique experiences.

Surface Computing:                  Surface computing breaks down traditional barriers between people and technology, changing the way people interact with all kinds of everyday content, from photos to maps to menus. The intuitive user interface works without a traditional mouse or keyboard, allowing people to interact with content and information by using their hands and natural movements. Users are able to access information either on their own or collaboratively with their friends and families, unlike any experience available today. Surface computing features four key attributes:·         Direct interaction. Users can actually “grab” digital information with their hands and interact with content through touch and gesture, without the use of a mouse or keyboard.·

Multi-touch contact. Surface computing recognizes many points of contact simultaneously, not just from one finger as with a typical touch screen, but up to dozens and dozens of items at once. ·

Multi-user experience. The horizontal form factor makes it easy for several people to gather around surface computers together, providing a collaborative, face-to-face computing experience.·

Object recognition. Users can place physical objects on the surface to trigger different types of digital responses, including the transfer of digital content

Features:

Multi-touch display. The Surface display is capable of multi-touch interaction, recognizing dozens and dozens of touches simultaneously, including fingers, hands, gestures and objects placed on the surface. Horizontal orientation. The 30-inch display in a table-sized form factor allows users to share, explore and create experiences together, enabling a truly collaborative computing experience.  Dimensions. Surface is 22 inches high, 21 inches deep and 42 inches wide.  Materials. The Surface tabletop is acrylic, and its interior frame is powder-coated steel.  Requirements:             Standard American 110–120V power

System:                        The Surface custom software platform runs on Windows Vista and has wired Ethernet 10/100 and wireless 802.11 b/g and Bluetooth 2.0 connectivity.

Availability:                  With deployments beginning in spring of 2008, consumers will be able to interact with Surface at select hotels, restaurants, retail establishments and public entertainment venues.

Well the computer seems to be just great with the kind of interfacing they are going to provide with the other devices . For those who are saying that I am well blah -blahing about it should get a peak of it at the site .The visuals are overwhelming and great . The main draw back its not meant for mass consumption though . You could find it in the airport , hotels lobby in few years but the one that can suit your drawing room centre piece is still  a decade far ! By the time we will be having floating place surface systems or foldable sheet surface comp for the poorer lot I guess . For the time being I am just dreaming where i could lay my hand on this sexy piece .

From the Virtual Pressroom: Microsoft Makes Strategic Changes in Technology and Business Practices to Expand Interoperability

February 21, 2008
Microsoft  announced a set of broad-reaching changes to its technology and business practices to increase the openness of its products and drive greater interoperability, opportunity and choice. These changes are codified into four new interoperability principles and corresponding actions: 1) ensuring open connections; 2) promoting data portability; 3) enhancing support for industry standards; and 4) fostering more open engagement with customers and the industry, including open source communities.

Well Microsoft has to acknowledged the growing clout of the open source and is doing its bit for it .Open source is good but with so many to choose from it has become problem of plenty may be the elite one’s or little knowledgible one’s may use open software , but hate it or love it the majority still uses the MS software (please don’t ask me if they do the original ones !) coz MS has set a lasting impression on the computer community world wide . Open source must come up it something very concrete else it may be lost in the maze of open source itself .
